Taiwan's top general was lost to a helicopter crash. Kobe Bryant, too. Adequate instruments and training for the pilot in the Kobe Bryant case would've avoided that crash. The word "crash" is used in software/hardware not confined to safety critical systems and so this is appropriate for HN.

How is this appropriate for HN?

How is it not?

Seems to fall more into the off-topic, as something that would be covered on TV news. Does it gratify intellectual curiosity? (honest question, no snark intended)

> On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

> Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

What do you think of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29472314, "third attack on Pearl Harbor"?

Interesting little-known military trivia, which by itself doesn’t make it appropriate for HN. Illustrates how a new tactic progresses from its start as an idea had by a few people to its eventual use in combat, which may make it appropriate for HN.

What do you think, since it is a precedent? Appropriate or not?
