Not all external monitors are "hot garbage" and it was probably my mistake to use that term.
Apple could always choose to add some "innovation" to the external monitor market by manufacturing their own line of displays. [1] For example, they have a nice 4.5K display in the iMac, but they won't sell it as a monitor for some reason.
Instead, they offer exactly one external monitor that starts at $4999 USD.
