Thieves are using Apple AirTags to track and steal cars in York Region of Canada

I thought I read that Apple will notify iPhone users if an airtag is following them. Did they all have android phones or is there a delay between when they get notified? I thought Apple had something to protect from this kind of abuse.

Wouldn't adding your own airtag to your car help?
