It would be interesting to know the demographic of the infected. If they are young, healthy people, then you can't draw broad conclusions.

Isn’t it the case that as viruses mutate they become more infectious but less deadly?

It's a crap-shoot, We and other infection able animals are mere in vevo 'petri dishes' for the RNA which is highly mutable.
