Cpuid: EAX=8FFFFFFFh: AMD Easter Egg

@dang, why does HN strip important parts out of a URI? `#EAX=8FFFFFFFh:_AMD_Easter_Egg` got stripped from here and is important for the submission to make sense...

For some reason the link didn't go down to the subsection for me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPUID#EAX=8FFFFFFFh:_AMD_Easte...

> Specific to AMD K7 and K8 CPUs, this returns the string "IT'S HAMMER TIME" in EAX, EBX, ECX and EDX,[28] a reference to the MC Hammer song U Can't Touch This.

Does anybody have an MWE handy for a layperson on Linux who knows nothing about CPUID that wants to try to reproduce this?

As an engineer, I wouldn't dare leave this behind.

If some copyright lawyer finds out, might he sue? Even if meritless, the company would not like the legal hot water. And recalling the silicon is expensive, compared with a software patch.

Not saying that's what happens, just that I would not want to personally shoulder the risk.

Seeing as the K5 manufacturer processor ID was “AMDisbetter!”, it seems they’ve had some light hearted messages hidden for quite a long time.

It’s a fun way to pique interest, when folks find these in the wild on actual machines.
