This was my primary argument for why my company shouldn’t switch from Sketch to Figma. Figma controls everything—we can’t open anything we create, the core of our business as a graphic design studio, without a connection to Figma’s servers.

Unfortunately, I lost this battle, and I’m not even sure I was on the right side of things, because the designers really prefer Figma and that counts for a lot. But I still don’t think we should find the state of things acceptable.

This seems to be the story of the times - swapped to google photos over my old huge manual photo collection - gain: awesome exciting “1 year ago today” and collages my wife loves, lose: all privacy, 15gb limit, compressed photos, the list goes on.

Smart TVs mostly just smart enough to show more ads, SaaS tools for work that when the internet connection flakes the entire office twiddles their thumbs, chat apps (everyone uses!) with no e2e encryption.

In some ways tech has gotten better but in many ways it’s far worse now than it ever was.

What about saving your designs locally from Figma (as a .fig file) ?

Doesn't that count as a backup?

So there's a second product, with a second fee, just to have backups? This sounds like the formation of a racket

And the fee is $50 or so per artboard which is wild

What value would you put on the artboard for nike.com’s homepage, as an example. It’s relative.
