onchain smart contract execution is a fundamentally broken concept. Everyone acknowledges this in the move to rollups and other "second layers" that execute offchain and then publish zero-knowledge proofs to the chain.

Why? The core value proposition is still there, be able to do transactions between parties that don't trust each other and prove that double-spending didn't happen.
