I guess it's pretty universally agreed that spoiling your kids is a bad thing. I always thought that the goal of parenting was to teach kids how to live healthy, productive, satisfying lives. Presumably that will make them happy in the long term.

As always, common knowledge is not really common.

Being a parent is a big job in which most people get very little training and most wing it. Trying to make the child happy right away only seems like a natural instinct, even if in the long run it might have adverse consequences.
