UC Berkeley is building a new dorm at a cost of $388,601 per bed. It will cost $300m for 772 beds.

I couldn't find the actual square footage but it did say that it is 14 stories and there is a 17000 sq ft retail/commercial space. So using that as a _very_ rough estimate, the total estimate is 238,000 sq ft, which comes out to $1260/sq ft to build.

Due to earthquakes, building in California should be more expensive than New York. I dont have any numbers to back that up though.
