Is anorexia the nexus of all online communities?

This article started out like it might be interesting, and maybe it is, but its central point

is just too deep for me. I assume that it is right, but when I try to figure out how to apply it to my favorite site (mathoverflow.net), it seems that I lack the self-awareness to see the big picture. Oh well.
