Like many things, people wanted cheaper and they wanted it now. I refer to this [1] excellent website to explain the economics of purchasing equipment or services, buying your first or last oven or for use in project management decision making.
I learned, of course, that purchase price is just the cost of entry. Also, unless you have experience with rebuilding airplanes, you should probably avoid the one selling for the lowest price.
Come to think of it, the Lycoming engine in that 172G could be thought of as the analog of that wood stove: simple, dirty, built to last. They don't make those like they used to, either.
I think the design from this era will hold up a lot better than that era but most things will not be used for 100 years on this point alone.
