This article makes a great case for why parapsychology is worthwhile. A researcher follows common practices and comes up with an absurd result. In figuring out how that happened researchers discover problems with the entire field. That's utility for parapsychology I've never imagined.

Scott Alexander makes that case in one of my favourite posts - "The control group is out of control". The control group for science being parapsychology.

More than that, flawed studies with false results get cited more often, which is a main incentive for scientific prominence.
