TL;DR: the author has working code for a CPython 3.9 implementation that gets rid of the GIL, works with most C extensions (albeit requiring to compile them again), and with better perfs _including_ for single threaded programs.
The report is worth read, very clear, professional, and humble, which for such a complex achievement, is quite a thing by itself.
