If you want a better conspiracy, how about "the whistleblower is a Facebook plant inserted to control the narrative and influence the regulatory capture Facebook needs to further entrench its position as a permanent fixture in society."

Honestly, that's not very far out as far as conspiracies go. Zuckerberg has been asking for more direct regulation for at least a couple years [1]. Then listening to some of Frances Haugen's testimony I started to wonder if Facebook was consistently optimizing for engagement and profit because if they didn't, then some competitor eventually would. If Facebook decided to be more benevolent now, then that future competitor might go full evil and overtake Facebook
It's very Machiavellian, but by going full evil right now, Facebook might force the government to intervene and essentially prevent future competitors.

Oh my. At least in my time, which has involved some serious work at a majority of FAANG, I've never found a group smaller than three that couldn't drop at least half a day of downtime if they were well-motivated. As FB themselves noted in their somewhat anemic public postmortem, extreme premature optimization of security measures typically just delays recovery.
