Russia test-fires new hypersonic missile from submarine

From the article: speed is mach 9, range is 1,000 km.

In a recent video lecture, Sabine Hossenfelder argues that hypersonic missiles would not be faster than ballistic missiles at intercontinental ranges. this criticism misses the fact that it appears hypersonic weapons are designed for sea or submarine launch, at relatively close range. Given the speed and range of the missile tested, time from launch to target is on the order of 5 minutes 40 seconds, as compared to about 30 minutes for ICBMs and 20 minutes for most SLBMs (submarine-launched ballistic missiles). Boost and reentry phases involve enough altitude gain and loss to greatly increase overall flight time from that of a lower, slower, dynamic flight path.

Hossenfelder is citing Tracy and Wright, "Modeling the Performance of Hypersonic Boost-Glide Missiles" (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08929882.2020.18...) (https://sci-hub.do/10.1080%2F08929882.2020.1864945), which assumes an 8,500 km flight path.

Chopping 25 minutes off the detection-and-response time profile of an attack is quite militarily and strategically significant. A country with its major population and political assets in coastal regions would be particularly vulnerable.

At best, one hopes that the principle goal of such a weapons system would be as a bargaining chip seeking to induce concessions elsewhere for not deploying such systems.
