There is a downside of having to spin and maintain your own instance, or maybe having to suffer from same issues.

I use masto.host for managed hosting of my personal instance.[0] I've had a good experience so far, but I get the impression that I'm missing out on a lot of the user discoverability features of being on a bigger instance.

My only gripe is that the website doesn't support exporting your data so that you're okay if masto.host disappears, but I request a backup via email once a month and they put it in my Megadrop within a day.

Mastodon has one of the worst userbases I've ever seen. It's like Twitter with AIDS.

Oh did they recently change "toots" to "posts"? Maybe that barrier to wider adoption is out of the way now.
