Why people who don’t trust vaccines are embracing unproven drugs

I can get that. I opted out of the x-ray scanners at the airport for years. I resented being "forced" into something that I found offensively intrusive into my privacy - of course, my Republican family members said "You're not being forced into anything, no one is holding a gun to your head. You could take the train if you really objected that much"*. But I opted out for years and took the plane. Now that they've improved the security of those machines, I begrudgingly go through them. But I get the sentiment; I took quiet solitude in my resistance to something that felt that it was being forced upon me. My grandparents refused* to wear seat belts their entire lives, because they refused to be forced to do so. Despite it being a good idea, and they acknowledged it was good, they still wouldn't do so because that would be complicity in the over-reach of the government.
Of the anti-covid-vaxxers I know, this is the main point. They're not taking alternative medicines, they're taking their chances. They're willing to die to prove a point - the point being that they can't be forced to take the vaccine. And if you ask me, it's a stupid point. Stupid point because you can only die to make a point once, and there are much more meaningful hills to die on.
Edit: Typos and added the story about seat belts.
The gaslighting over any treatment other than the vax is beyond criminal at this point. Just watch:
I regret every single day I didn’t try to make easy money off pushing bogus treatments to people like yourself.
