The next paragraph provides more context: "Ice provides historical records about climate and shows the impact humanity has had. But many glaciers are now melting, prompting renewed urgency among scientists."

In terms of visuals and design this is one of most gorgeous links I have ever clicked on.

why don't they go to higher altitudes, such as Himalayas?

Well they do but need samples for all different altitudes. As the air pressure changes the composition of the atmosphere changes.
