Interesting - I remember someone at my last job saying that Gopher was still a thing, and that there were maybe 100 Gopher sites. I didn't realise there were licensing issues in the 1990s though - I figured the only reason it disappeared was because of the world wide web.
GopherVR reminds me of VRML, which was booming for a time in the late 90s/early 2000s. I remember implementing an application that did some renderings with a VRML client (I think it was called CortanaVRML)
