Reddit’s Hosting Service and the Dangers of Outlinking

A scientific approach to explore some of the issues would be to try to measure how much racism occurs, to what extent that racism is having a real world impact, and the extent to which regulating speech more on Reddit would have a chilling effect on other speech. But instead the article takes for granted that Reddit doesn't censor its users enough. My impression of the article is it is ridiculously one-sided punditry containing very little evidence.
Maybe one day someone will make a social network that meets these people's criteria. Instead of a textbox you'll just have a radio button with the choice of "Meep." or "Meep!".
People figured out how to abuse the very simple chat emojis that Nintendo offered, or that came with Hearthstone.
Is it really outlinking if it's reddit's own image hosting service? Where is the data for the analysis discussed and why are all of the percentages expressed in ranges? Really shoddy stuff, even if I am sympathetic to the main point that hate speech is extremely hard to regulate.
But like you said, it's incredibly incoherent and hard to figure out exactly what the point is.
For memes hosted by reddit, OCR and moderate.
One particularly nasty example from my "you evil fucks" folder.[1]
Headline designed to be shared on twitter and cater to the anti-gun mob:
> Man paralyzed by concealed carry holder in 2017 dies from injuries, police say
Last two paras of the story:
> Ford’s injury stemmed from a Dec. 12, 2017, shooting that began with the then-18-year-old pulling his own gun on a 27-year-old man driving his vehicle into a rear yard in the 9100 block of South Harper Avenue, according to Chicago police.
> The older man, a concealed carry holder, pulled his own firearm and shot the victim, police said. Ford was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment and was later charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor aggravated assault. But the case against Ford was dropped by Cook County prosecutors nine days after his first court hearing.
There are thousands and thousands of these if you go looking. Want to make the world a better place? Ban journalism.
