Dishwasher Pete

I first learned about Dishwasher Pete in Chuck Woodbury’s amazing Out West Newspaper, that he published out of Edmonds, WA. I can no longer find it online. There are some used copies of a book based on it at Amazon:

Pete was a guy who liked washing dishes. Restaurants tried to promote him, to make him a manager, and whenever they did this he would quit. He liked washing dishes. He did not like doing other things.

After Out West Newspaper, David Letterman invited him to his show. Instead of going he sent a friend who pretended to be him.

I feel Dishwasher Pete. He captures a universal sentiment of what it is to be human. We are all Dishwasher Petes.
