Ask HN: What's up with the black bar on top of the screen?

Haven't been to HN for more than a year so I can't say how often the UI changes but I noticed there's a black bar on top of the header. Why's that?

Usually means a nerd hall of famer passed away.

You mean this?

          <tr><td bgcolor="#000000"><img src="s.gif" height="5" width="0"></td></tr>

Yep, that’s the one. Is it some kind of web beacon?

Appears to be gone

It's a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Or is it an enigma wrapped in a mystery?
