Because Google cannot legally operate the car in the streets without a driver. Therefore they put a driver there and it's on him to choose how to drive the car.
> What is the security mechanisms that allow such cars to be in the streets?
The wonderful security mechanism of liability, lawsuits, and insurance.
I believe takeoff, ascent, landing and descent is still done by pilots.
Additionally, trouble with cars is, they have evolved for 100 years around sight as the primary navigation function. Planes almost never had that luxury, so they have relied on instruments for a long time. Computers are good at instruments, not so good at sight.
If it was human error, 160K miles have been logged without incident... how the hell is this a good reminder of why we should be creeped out by Google's experiment? (edit: The last sentence of that last paragraph is equally useless.) I'm no journalist but I feel comfortable rolling my eyes at this article and its style.
