A slight correction: the fixed phrase in German is
"Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne Ende",
which translates as
"Better a horrifying ending than a horror without end"
"Better a horrifying ending than a horror without end"
Translation is interpretation.
So, mine is not the the only valid one.
And, it's a saying handed down by people admiring his determination.
