e.g. Apps don't get killed arbitrarily, WiFi switches to different AP according to the signal as expected, I know when the phone will run out of power etc.
Yes, it's a shame that we are not even able to take basic compute behavior for granted. Would we allow our desktop software to be killed randomly by the OS?
Anyways, the aftermarket android ROM discussions often leads to what's missing and hence I wanted to state what I've gained for a change.
Could you recommend a good resource to find a modern, LineageOS-compatible device?
LineageOS's own "Devices" list is completely unsortable, so it's extremely hard to answer the query "What device released in 2020 or 2021 with a modern base Android version should I get if I plan to use LineageOS?"
r/LineageOS[1] puts out information on devices with official support as and when they get added.
If I was in your position I would buy OnePlus 6/6T as they have both official LineageOS support and also fast becoming the best best device to run PostmarketOS[2].
Disclaimer: Although my earlier comment(even past comments) seems to give glowing recommendations for LineageOS please be aware that it works for my use cases. I've traded in convenience for freedom. Android is fast constructing walls around the garden, Everything from banking apps to Netflix might soon stop working on LineageOS because the developer who built the system to hide the hacks is joining Google Security team(Good for him & android security though).
