I wonder if the NHTSA could require all self driving cars to use lidar if the safety stats show it is a significant safety improvement.
Check out how long it took for even simple safety features to make it into all cars.

IMHO, lane assist isn't "self driving" any more than cruise control is.
I think you get into self driving territory when the car makes lane changes or turns at intersections.
