I've known plenty of people, including myself, that have gone on an exercise plan and have lost very little weight. One of the reasons, in addition to what this article points out, is that exercise increases your appetite, something that few people point out when they talk about using exercise for weight loss.
But yet I've seen plenty of people lose weight once they have had surgery to reduce the amount of food they eat even with no exercise.
We need to point out that exercise is important but it's not the magic that will cure obesity. It all comes down to the number of calories you eat each day.
But, to get there we will have to have a built environment and social norms that support it. The trends have been positive, but much more is still possible. If you really want to lose weight fast for a full 36 or 48 hours. It has been shown to have many beneficial effects when you go into ketosis.
