Think about it as an enterprise that has built their stuff with EC2, S3, IAM, Route53, RDS, Cloudfront etc. Would any sane IT architect say - Let’s find the technical equivalent of each of those, and rewrite all our automation and management scripts to those, and hope that they all work. All for that sweet 10% cost difference with the new cloud vendor! ?
The big guys of the cloud are winning at imposing lock-in ecosystems on businesses.
Source: I have worked at infrastructure engineering capacity at two companies that went the way of the cloud, one with AWS and the other with Azure. I’d say it took about a couple of days before they used some component of infrastructure that was cloud platform specific. From then on, all engineers assume “oh we are a AWS shop” or “Oh we are an Azure shop”.
