It just seems to me that the natural state of many LiIon chemistries (LiCoO2 in particular) is "on fire" and if you treat them very nicely and actively manage them, you can prevent them from getting to that state most of the time.

Read the article more closely and the Bolt batteries are suspected to be NMC, which is apparently more prone to fire than CoO2?

This does not inspire confidence in the idea of making the batteries part of the car's structure.

There are different chemistries and designs that are more or less prone to fire. These batteries in the Bolt (and Hyundai) have a particular design that makes them higher risk. lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO) batteries are know to be quite stable.

Oh for sure, I'm just thinking about it from the angle of a battery recall being a swap of the battery pack vs me getting an entirely new car because they can't reasonably change the battery components.

Not sure if I understand. You can have battery be structural and easy to swap, these to things are not in conflict.

In fact, on the Pack level, many packs are already structural.

Switching individual modules inside of packs is pretty terrible idea.

In fact, you can even go one step further and have individual cells be structural as both Tesla and BYD are doing.
