Having worked with a lot of different software engineers in my career, I've found that the ones with a "possible by default" mindset are much more pleasant to work with than the ones with an "impossible by default" mindset. Early in my career I was surrounded by more "impossible by default" engineers, and often had that mindset myself. It led to a lot of tense relationships with stakeholders. Over time, "possible by default" has become my norm, and relationships with stakeholders are much smoother. I think one of the things that prevented me from taking this approach sooner was a fear of promising that something was possible, but not being able to deliver. Experience has given me more confidence that most things are possible, and expanded my imagination of possible ways to do things, as well as learning how to navigate stakeholder expectations. I wonder how younger or more fearful engineers could accelerate this mindset shift.
