I Am Not a Progressive

Yes, progressives did lead the charge for community based mental health services replacing mental hospitals. And guess what. It works all over the rest of the developed world.
What the rest of the developed world didn’t have was Raegan kicking out millions of mentally ill people, and further massive underspending towards mental services.
Countries which do that don’t have mentally ill homeless wandering on their streets.
The author blames safe injection sites for the explosion of drug addiction, never mind that safe injection sites barely exist in the country, and are anyways very new as a public health measure (the first one that was officially endorsed is probably fewer than a few years old). Safe injection sites don’t just exist to allow people to indulge their addiction. They also exist because they provide an opportunity for addicted people to access official medical services and social services which then provides opportunities to help them manage or eliminate their addictions. It’s something that has been successful in reducing addiction throughout the world.
Safe injection sites are a step towards eliminating addiction, not an acceptance that addiction will happen.
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just power from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth and their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction cannot lay claim to progress. They are reactionary.

All we need to do is to switch to NUCLEAR energy, and enjoy a glowing future. Shillenberger at his finest.
Sounds like the author found that solving hard problems is hard, and in particular ideology-driven solutions don’t always work.
It’s not a dig at liberal, progressive, leftist or whatever ideologies, it’s true for true whole spectrum. It’s like fixing bugs with language design principles.
The ultimate "we're fucked" idea.

It’s damn hard to be supportive of a public governing philosophy that you have been fighting against for decades even if you might agree with where they might be on left-right moral axis on big topics.
They complain that Sacramento progressives are spreading hopelessness because a Capitol lobbyist (!) claims that nothing can be done.
Really, the article is basically throwing a bunch of random anecdotes that they are not entirely thrilled about and ascribing them to “progressiveness”.
