Ask HN: Why does Excel suck on a Mac (and can it be improved)?

Can somebody please tell me why Excel for the Mac is so inferior to the PC version? I get the spinning wheel for operations that take seconds on a PC. And does anybody have any suggestions to speed things up and/or improve performance?
