"The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants" is the seminal resource on lindenmayer systems, written by Aristid Lindenmayer himself. It's interesting to see how much of this is derived from not mathematics but partly from Noam Chomsky's theories on linguistics, particularly Chomsky Grammars (Where productions are derived sequentially in those, L-systems they are derived in parallel branches, which makes it great for modeling stuff like cell growth, trees, and other such branching structures).
The academic resources linked here are kind of hard to approach, in short the documentation is a bit lacking, but if anyone wants to get into trying to learn how to render these with free software I suggest starting with context free (2d) or structure synth (3d), as the resources for picking these up are a bit better than an html file made in 1998
