If you already have your project running in a vm then the transition time may not be worth it. Plus the possible land mines you may hit in transitioning. You can gain parity with dev and prod or at least get closer. There may be some security benefits as well as it makes maintaining and updating the system easier. Tending vms is hard and you have to stay on top of updates.
