> Earthsight holds FSC largely responsible for the logging abuses linked to Ikea and other retailers we connected to the scandal. They rely on the green label and its competitor PEFC to ensure their supplies are sustainable and legally sourced.
Seems at a first glance this is about a certification body failing to do it's job. It may not be entirely fair to have IKEA in the title, even if they are affected.
Personal opinion, certifications like this always end up being gamed. Look at debt rating agencies, look at Big 4 audit results, etc. The certification body just becomes an easy weak spot to be exploited.
I agree that IKEA, possibly unfairly, might be used as a big name to attract attention. They seem, according to the article, to have dropped the relevant suppliers.
And yet they still seem to want to blame ikea for this. The way this is presented just seems incredibly dishonest.
They could've come out much more strongly against the FSC and the allegations ie. something like "we're taking the Earthlink report very seriously and will be working with the FSC to have a full investigation performed on the origin of the wood sourced for these product lines". Instead they denied any wrongdoing (not the point, IKEA) and quietly dropped the supplier.
Based on what I read in this article, to me it seems like IKEA is just covering their own ass as much as possible while not asking for any accountability from their suppliers in the process. Maybe they are worried about what further scrutiny of their suppliers might uncover. Don't ask, don't tell.
I can attest, the industry been mafia infested for the last 20 years. All kinds of mafias been invited by Putin to pay tribute, even foreign ones.
The saying was to count how fast people are shot when they try to enter the lumber business.
