The Count of Monte Cristo is inspired by a real framing-revenge plot story

The source of this article is a single 1938 book. This does not seem to pass the sniff test.

Most likely the count is based on the life of Alexandre Dumas father General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. As told in The Black Count https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Count:_Glory,_Revo..., Napoleon had conspired to have the elder Dumas arrested and dishonored.

If you haven’t read it, it is a very fun read. The main character is like the original Batman.

If reading it in English, seek out the modern Robin Buss translation, e.g. in Penguin - it is far clearer (and completere) than the older public domain version - and has excellet footnotes.
