> Golden handcuffs are a collection of financial incentives that are intended to encourage employees to remain with a company for a stipulated period of time.
The last part, "stipulated period of time", is the key. The salary or perks that you get every month do not count as "golden handcuffs". The stock grants that vest over two years are. The most famous / egregious example are Uber's non-transferable options [1] -- you get millions of dollars but only if you stay with the company until IPO.

What?
It's also, frankly, just plain wrong. Just because a 4 bedroom house has 4 bedrooms doesn't mean people are renting those bedrooms out at that price.
The actual average rent for a 1-bedroom in San Jose is $2,150 / month which is $25,800 / year.
It's a shame this author has so many basic mistakes in their post as otherwise it is a valid discussion.
4500 per month, divided by 4 rooms is $1125/month, not $1200.
You can book the whole house and fill it with friends.
But look, it really doesn't matter if you're paying $1125 or $1200, that has approximately 0 impact on the actual conclusions of this post.
