As to the teaching problem. I think the students correctly identified his problem. Valuable lesson at least technically. Don't react with a litmus test that is as bad as his antics.
The "Alliance" doesn't seem to be helpful at all. On the contrary, it may have a far worse effect than this professor. It is reactionary and in its panic wants to bury all academic discourse and wants to put people under suspect.
> And as they learned more about the history and limits of academic freedom and free speech on campus — a few members happened to have law degrees — they warmed to the prospect of some kind of limited intervention.
Yeah, wrong. As I said, even pupils identified him and his antics. What follows now is not constructive at all.
> "Academics have a tendency to say, ‘Academic freedom is my right to say whatever the f— I want.’ And it just isn’t." - Reichman
That is his opinion and apparently that of the AAUP. I think people try to
> “enforced by the public opinion of the profession”
No. The public opinion of academics was proven wrong time and time again. Not on a race issue perhaps, but to elevate that as a precedent is just moronic, especially for academics. You would need apply that to all theories with disproven effectiveness and truthfulness.
He was censured in the end. That isn't a great loss itself. But it is a huge loss in trust in academic institution and its ability to contradict false information. And this will resonate further as I very much believe we will hear theories as alien as those from the banned professor. Few would have known his name, but many will believe he hasn't been proven wrong...
DeVaro:
> repercussions I have faced for speaking on the issue of academic freedom
He is correct and probably replaced by someone that doesn't fight for it, a typical Yes-Man.
