The first time I drove in Oregon I had no idea that you weren't allowed to pump your own gas. I pulled up to a gas station and proceeded to pump my own gas, something I had been doing for many years in a dozen other states. A minute or two into pumping, I suddenly saw a man come rushing out of the store, running toward me shouting. It scared the hell out of me! I thought something was really wrong, like somebody smoking a cigarette while filling up a gas can or something. Turned out I was breaking the law. He finished the pumping for me and warned me not to try anything like that again. Welcome to Oregon.
Wow. I don't know what I'd do in that situation. Now that I think of it, it actually might be logical to not allow people to pump their own gas. Safety and all that.
I'm in New Jersey, and while it's illegal here too, no one seems care that much. I usually let the attendant operate the pump for me, but I've done it myself a few dozen times over the decades, and I see other customers help themselves every so often. If there's a card reader on the pump and the attendant isn't around, I'll pump my own.
I prefer the opposite situation where the car with Oregon plates is patiently sitting in a Washington state gas station, wondering what is taking the attendant so long
How do you pay them? Do you go inside? Does the attendant have a card reader?
I've only ever paid with a card, but you basically just hand the card to the attendant and they run it through the card reader on the pump just like you would in a different state. As far as I can tell there is nothing unique about the pumps in Oregon compared to everywhere else.
I see, thanks. I guess cards with PIN aren't very common then.
Nope not in the US. They're getting increasingly popular but I'd still say 70% to 80% of gas pumps don't support them.
With the advent of contactless cards, most cards with PINs don’t need them for the kinds of purchases you generally do at a gas pump (thankfully).
> The state has instituted exceptions for certain areas, such as remote, rural regions and tribal lands.
Sooo the whole state minus Portland?
Why would there be a ban on gas self-service in the first place?
Luddites trying to protect crappy jobs.
Are electric car owners allowed to plug in their own cars in Oregon?
Have you heard about a requirement to wear a mask outdoors? Same people.
Ugh! --must stop speed-reading late at night, with tired eyes, on tiny mobile screen. I read that as "Orang-Utans Allowed to Pump Their Own Gas..." and the mind was temporarily boggled.
