Is there any global measurement? If you dug in 3 meters would it still be cold? What metric is useful at all here, I’ve never had to consider it since the concept suggests permanently frozen, and that was a reliable assumption

Yeah, they're wildly different measurements. I'm sure you've read about world record temps being set at furnace creek mojave but they're measuring the air. I'm sure the ground is much more hot. The air record there is 137F while the ground record is 201F. Your rubber boots might start getting soft. lol
