There's a lot of folks who get stuck, or who spend endless amount of time roadblocking pretty good starts because one time they saw a system where such and such. Hesitancy & fear rule a large part of the population, and it's sad: we're engineers. Heads up, look to the stars, be wonderful & amazing, have that attitude: you are.
This article is a much easier to approach read than my other, long treasured, much loved G+ post, Steve Yegge's "Notes from The Mystery Magic Bus"[1], which talks to how we align ourselves & our views versus the things we face. There's a simple start to the post:
> Software engineering has its own political axis, ranging from conservative to liberal.
And he really goes into it. Really explained to me what I had been seeing, the different alignment of folk. And it helped me decide how I want to align myself, what approach I wanted to have. It's one of the best posts I've ever read about the human element of engineering, and is a go-to recommendation to begin to see & deal with the different styles of programmers out there.
