Indeed, I use them almost interchangeably. When I'm trying to do something on my Ubuntu box, I often find that the RPi crowd has blogged about what I'm trying to do. And vice versa.
There's a few exemptions though; Broadcom's incompatibilities, special bootloader setup and the Pi's deviating kernel headers sometimes make the guides not work for x86-based systems.
