While I don't love seeing great things like Freenode failing like that, I feel like exercising the community's ability to be flexible and fight for freedom might make this a net positive.
It's a little surprising that there isn't one clear emerging shadow protocol in the GNU community. It would be interesting to see how Jami would approach IRC like channels in it's distributed fashion or which server it would adopt for use with its identity service.
