Just because insects are smaller / less complex living beings, do they matter less? If we translate that to humans, does that make killing a skinny young baby more acceptable than killing a fat adult?
It seems like society deems killing an insect is better than killing an animal which is better than killing an human being you don't know in a remote country which is better than killing a human near you.
Our morality is definitely heavily based on what is convenient to us - with an extra layer on top because of our societal reputation system. It's interesting to see how people feel instinctive repulsion which seems to contain this rational societal considerations.
Killing an insect means I can't look at a tiny animal. Almost nobody will judge me for killing an insect.
Killing an animal means I can't look at a bigger, more entertaining animal. I may be judged if I kill an animal, based on the animal.
Killing a human from another tribe won't change the opinion most of the people in my tribe have of me.
