Ask HN: Is HN Down?

I got many errors:```We're having some trouble serving your request. Sorry! ```

Performance was severely degraded for a couple hours. We tried a bunch of things, none of which worked, and then I suddenly remembered that I had pushed a trivial code change just before things went to shit. Reverting it made the problem go away. Doh! I still don't understand why.

Sorry everybody!

Edit: it was not for naught, though, because some of the tweaks that the incredible mthurman came up with seem to have made things a bit snappier than they were before.

no worries! thanks for your hard work!

haha yea. Always, always check if a code change was made in addition to checking traffic in general. It's always that one small damn code change :).

Wow, some comment operations are incredibly fast now, fast enough they seem instantaneous. Thank you!

Any details on what the "bug" in the change was which caused the problem?

Nothing interesting. I was experimenting with giving special treatment to comments that consisted solely of archive links.

Just pulled 'new' and sorted the ages of new posts:

    50 50 51 51 51 51 52 52 52 53 53 56 56 57 58 58 58
    49
    35
    21 23
    12 14 14 18 18 18
    0 3 8

I'm guessing something happened at around t-49m (UTC 19:00-ish).

It seems to be more stable if you're logged out.

Maybe HN suffered from the HN kiss of death.

I would add a comment, but HN is down.

i have server maintainence messages in the banner very plausible explanation, so be patient until the corrections and administration is done.

Seems to be improving right now.

I'm also seeing this error
