Entertaining but it's not as hypocritical as it looks. Plastics represent about 4-5% of all oil and gas production. Energy and transportation are by far the main offenders.

In any case it's basically like saying you can't care about the environment if you drive an ICE car.

Plastic for clothing makes a lot of sense compared to stuff like single use products. Plastic is durable and water resistant which are exactly the qualities you want for jackets, etc. Going back to leather and animal products aren't great options.

I don’t see the problem. North Face doesn’t want their logo and name smack dab next to oil and gas logos and names. I don’t think anyone is foolish enough to think their plastic and rubber clothing is made of something else. Nor do I think North Face is running some kind shady marketing pretending to be a green company. If the oil and gas companies are so upset they could start investing in making their own clothing line with some of their massive fortunes.

I don't have the details of what actually happened, so there may be more to it from North Face's side. I think though that this kind of thing is typical of the hipocracy that almost necessarily happens when a company starts trying to pass judgement on industries or clients it serves. As soon as you start going down the road of judging in this way, you inevitably become inconsistent and hypocritical.

So, I should hold off on buying things from North Face until they inevitably announce their new sustainably-sourced clothing line in a few months (which is when I'd be looking for winter clothing anyway)? Good strategy.
