Replace crypto with Internet and you got a perfect article from 1997 about this new weird technology called Internet.

Where the author declares all good ideas and startups around this Internet has already been "mined to perfection".

To who? To achieve what? Etc. while your statement is accurate it doesn’t scope it such that this is a fair argument to make.

Sure, cryptocurrency is not a great payment method or currency today. That does not mean it is not useful from day one, it just means that use case was not from day one. There have been technical advancements that people are using from crypto currencies. It may not be what you feel is useful, but some do.

To the users of it. To communicate. To share files. A bunch more functionality followed shortly after.
