As a small farmer, I can tell you with no ambiguity that these systems offer little value to me. Instead, I firmly believe that they are an existential threat to small farms everywhere. There have been repeated attempts over the years to shove “tractability” down the throats of producers, and these efforts come at the direct behest of big ag. They are the only ones that stand to benefit (and afford) to this scheme. It will not improve food safety. It will not lower consumer costs for food. It will marginally increase the profits of only the largest farms and create undue burden for everyone else. There is absolutely nothing positive in this technology for society as a whole, but it is only a matter of time until big ag’s lobbyists manage to buy off enough corrupt politicians, increasing their already overwhelming regulator capture and push more small farms out of business. But hey, enjoy your cheap soulless food.
