Ask HN: If I want to implement my own overlay netwoks where do I start?

There is a great docker Swarm feature which provides you with secure by default overlay networks with just few lines of config.

But it looks like it’s not a part of standalone swarmkit tool.

How should I approach the goal of creating similar feature from scratch (or lower level libs, building blocks)?
