Didn't see that doublespeak "We value your privacy" banner coming on a website that literally has FOSS included in the domain name. (If you don't need consent, then you don't need a "cookie wall". If you don't do invasive tracking but just regular visitor counting, you don't need consent. Any site with a privacy pop-up is one that wants you to "opt-in" to something that isn't in your interest.)
For GNOME there is also the "DrawOnYourScreen" [0] extension.
This is one of those dumb but simple and effective solutions to otherwise complex problem that I just absolutely love. I use Epic Pen on Windows when doing video editing and other media work and I need to line something up close enough. It's rarely worth the effort of duplicating, overlaying and tweaking the opacity of footage just to roughly match two shots and then delete the overlay, but drawing a quick outline on my screen takes like 2 seconds.
First time I've heard of this and it sounds very useful.
Compiz used to allow drawing on the screen (either normally, or with fire), but sadly it fell out of maintainence.
This should really be a standard feature of the UI.
KDE -- I guess they want us to call it Plasma nowadays -- still has this feature (it's off by default, but you can enable it in Desktop Effects). It's pretty clunky to use, though: you have to hold down both Shift and Meta while drawing with the mouse. And I don't think you can draw with fire.
Sadly, no fire but you can change the colour and thickness of the line. You can also set your own key bindings.
> or with fire
Haha, I miss those fun days ! Fire, cube desktops and wobbly windows everywhere.
Thanks for sharing. Looks like gromit-mpx fixes one of the longstanding bugs in gromit in which new strokes often cause a line across the screen (from the end of the last stroke?).
Woh, works on Wayland?!? Very surprised by this.
Now we just need some multi-pointer compositors for Wayland!! :)
Been using this for a long time and it’s great.
This is one of those delightful "I didn't know I needed that" discoveries for me. Nifty, works as advertised.
I use from gromit-mix for giving talks, drawing on my slides. Very effective, great tool.
Impressive compatibility, but no wlroots support, it seems :/
My daughter invented something similar. It turns out that a whiteboard marker will draw anywhere on a Linux desktop screen, and it's also completely cross platform.
This used to be helpful for those games that didn't give you a crosshair.
I've actually done this a few times before - it works really well until you write on a screen with a particular kind of high gloss anti-reflective coating, which it damages, and leaves you with visible lines even after you wipe the ink away. Not recommended!
She found a hardware solution to a software problem.
I tried this method, took a screenshot but it didn't appear on the screenshot. Do I need to use a permanent marker instead?
